Why Generic AI Prompts Produce Generic Goals (And What to Do Instead)

The reason your AI-assisted goal setting keeps producing obvious, forgettable advice—and the specific changes that fix it.

You’ve had the experience. You open a chat with an AI, describe your goals, and get back five suggestions that could appear in any self-help book published in the last thirty years. Eat better. Exercise regularly. Set clear priorities. Build routines. Network consistently.

The advice isn’t wrong. It’s just useless—because it requires no knowledge of who you are, what you’re trying to do, or what’s actually standing in your way.

The frustrating part is that the same AI, given better input, can produce genuinely useful, specific, calibrated goal guidance. The model didn’t change. The input did.


The Statistical Average Problem

Large language models generate responses by predicting what text is most likely to follow a given prompt, based on patterns in their training data. When your prompt is underspecified, the model has no basis for distinguishing your situation from anyone else’s who might have typed something similar. So it produces the statistical average: text that would be appropriate for the widest possible range of people who might ask that question.

For goal setting, the statistical average is exactly what you don’t want. You don’t have average goals. You don’t have average constraints. You’re not working in an average situation with average resources.

A prompt like “help me set better professional goals” gives the AI nothing to work with except the words “professional” and “goals.” The response will be calibrated to everyone who has ever asked a similar question. The output will be applicable to all of them and tailored to none of them.

The Three Specific Things That Make Prompts Generic

1. No Situational Context

Generic prompt:

Help me set career goals.

What the AI knows about you from this prompt: you have a career.

That is not enough information to produce tailored output. The AI will return advice appropriate for anyone with a career who wants to improve it—which, by definition, cannot be specific to you.

The fix: Add two to three sentences describing your current situation in the domain. Not your aspirations—your current state.

Improved:

I'm a software engineer at a startup, 4 years in, recently passed over for a principal engineer promotion. The feedback was that my technical work is strong but I have low visibility outside my immediate team.

Now the AI has something to reason about. The problem domain is specific. The constraint is named. The feedback provides a starting point.

2. No Constraints

Generic prompt:

Give me goals for improving my health this year.

Health is a domain. “This year” is a time horizon. But the AI has no idea what you’re working with—how much time you have, what your current health baseline looks like, what has worked or failed before, what resources are available.

Without constraints, the AI cannot distinguish between what is achievable for you and what is aspirational for someone else. So it defaults to suggestions that are achievable for an idealized version of you with infinite time and no competing priorities.

The fix: Name your most binding constraint before asking for goals.

Improved:

I want to improve my cardiovascular health. I have 20 minutes per day available on weekdays—that's the hard limit, not a starting point. I've tried running programs twice and abandoned both after about 3 weeks. I sit at a desk for 8-10 hours a day. Give me 2 specific goals for the next 60 days designed specifically for someone with those constraints and that track record.

The constraint changes everything. The AI cannot suggest a 45-minute daily running program and call it achievable. It has to work within the 20-minute limit. And the track record with previous programs forces the AI to account for the consistency problem.

3. No Output Specification

Generic prompt:

What should my goals be for next quarter?

This is a question, not a brief. The AI will decide what kind of output to produce, what format to use, how many goals to suggest, and how detailed to make them. The default is usually a prose paragraph with general suggestions—useful as a starting point, but rarely immediately actionable.

The fix: Tell the AI exactly what format you want the output in and what each item in that output should contain.

Improved:

Give me 3 goals for next quarter. Format each as: Goal statement (one sentence, specific and measurable) → Why this goal, not a different one (two sentences) → The single most important thing I need to do in week 1 to make progress. No prose introduction—just the three goals in this format.

The output specification removes the AI’s latitude to produce something generic-but-safe. It forces structured output that contains specific, actionable information.


The Myth: Better AI = Better Goals

There is a persistent assumption that as AI models improve, the generic-output problem will solve itself. More capable models will understand what you need without you having to explain it.

This is partially true for narrow domains with extensive context already available. An AI with access to your calendar, past goals, and work history can infer relevant context it wasn’t explicitly given.

But for the core goal-setting conversation—where you’re deciding what to pursue, why, and how—the model still needs input. Locke and Latham’s research on goal-setting theory established that goals are only motivating to the degree they are specific and appropriately challenging for the individual. An AI without information about the individual cannot set goals that are appropriately challenging for that individual, regardless of model capability.

The second prompt is specific to a situation that couldn’t describe most managers. The AI has something real to work with.


What “Generic But Accurate” Actually Costs You

The worst thing about generic AI goal advice is not that it’s wrong. Most of it is technically correct. Eat well, sleep enough, build consistent habits, network intentionally—these are true things.

The cost is opportunity. A generic goal tells you nothing about what to do next. It imposes no useful constraints on your behavior. It doesn’t help you make the actual decision that’s in front of you: whether to pursue this goal or that one, how to allocate the time you actually have, what to say no to in order to make room for what matters.

Specific goals calibrated to your situation do all of those things. They tell you what to do on Monday morning, not just in a vague quarterly future. That’s the gap that better prompts close.
