There is a category of productivity and decision-making advice that sounds convincing and is mostly ineffective. “Just be aware of your biases” belongs in that category.

Pre-committed decision criteria do not ask you to “be less affected by sunk costs.” They require you to define stop conditions before you are invested in the plan’s continuation—before the sunk cost effect is operating.
In each case, the intervention works by making certain information structurally unavoidable rather than by asking the planner to be more vigilant.
The Practical Implication for Planners
If you have spent time learning about cognitive biases—reading Kahneman, studying the list of biases, understanding the mechanisms—that knowledge is not wasted. It is useful for one specific purpose: identifying which structural interventions are relevant to your situation.
If you know about the planning fallacy, you know that reference class forecasting is the appropriate structural fix. If you know about confirmation bias, you know that adversarial review is the right intervention. Bias knowledge tells you where to look and what tools to apply. It does not substitute for applying them.
The mistake is treating education about bias as a planning intervention in its own right. Reading this article will not make your plans more accurate. Running a pre-mortem before you finalize your next project plan might.
